Military and Design/Build Delivery

Nisqually Environmental Education Center

Nisqually Environmental Education CenterArt Anderson Associates was the design firm teamed with Triton Marine Construction on this design/build project to construct a new Environmental Education Center for the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge in Olympia. The facility encompasses worker space, common equipment rooms, meeting and instruction space, storage, utilities and occupant services.

AAA was responsible for schematic design documents consisting of preliminary drawings and other documents illustrating design criteria. Specific attention was given to customer value and program and budget alignment. To accomplish this, AAA and Triton reviewed alternative design and construction approaches and developed a mutually-agreeable program.

The scope of work for AAA included preliminary (35%) drawings consisting of floor plans, exterior elevations, section views; site plan review and coordination; summary of program findings; support for the contractor cost estimate; development of performance standards, including architectural, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, security, fire protection, video and data; and a schedule for follow-on design work. A second phase of the project included the provision of 100% design drawings for the EEC building, an alternative breezeway design, write-ups for sustainable design, construction support services and complete as-built drawings.

Naval Base Entry Gates

NavSubBase New London Entry GateArt Anderson Associates provided architectural and engineering services as part of a design/build team to construct new entry gates and associated facilities at the Naval Submarine Base, New London in Connecticut. The $4.8 million project encompassed approximately 7,000sf in new construction and achieved its goal of providing the proper security measures necessary to meet modern security requirements and terrorist threats.

Along with our design/build partner, a joint venture between Triton Marine Construction and TechnoGeneral Services, we designed and supervised construction of new security guardhouses, vehicle lanes, firing positions, a privately-owned-vehicle waiting/inspection shelter, a generator enclosure and canopy. The existing guardhouses were salvaged and relocated, replaced by hardened structures. Each guardhouse includes a restroom, intrusion detection system, CCTV system, LAN and a base-wide duress alarm system. The new firing positions replaced existing sandbagged structures, and the new generator enclosure is hardened.

One example of how our team was able to contribute to schedule and cost control for this project was our firm's suggestion to build a temporary gate facility, which the Navy had not considered. This allowed construction to occur on both gates simultaneously, instead of sequentially, allowing the project to be completed in only a year, as opposed to the two that was originally anticipated.

E/A-18G Facility Upgrades

EA/18G AircraftArt Anderson Associates teamed with design/build partner Alutiiq International Solutions to upgrade facilities at Naval Air Station, Whidbey Island to accommodate the new E/A-18G electronic attack aircraft.  The project's objectives were to establish three new parking aprons with 400Hz electrical power and low pressure air systems, and modify, alter and repair various buildings to support the new aircraft, including the complete renovation of Hangar 8, a large, aging facility.  Art Anderson Associates was the Designer of Record and the lead A/E firm for this project.

The scope of work for design included civil, mechanical, electrical, structural and architectural elements.  Building upgrades included modifications to the fleet readiness center building, hangars and a supply warehouse.  Architectural review of one of the hangars included program planning to ensure mission requirements are supported.  The design of the 400Hz flight line electrical distribution system was a specialty design element being provided.

AAA developed a design quality control plan for inclusion in the overall quality control plan.  AAA also provided the services of a LEED-Accredited Professional to develop LEED evaluation and analysis and incorporate sustainable design practices where possible.
