Naval Architecture

Naval Architecture Services

Art Anderson Associates has a tradition of providing expert naval architecture services for a variety of clients and vessels. We're experienced in many of the various subdisciplines of naval architecture, including hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, marine structures, vessel arrangement and vessel construction. Over the years, we've developed particular areas of specialty, for which there are few firms that can match our expertise.

Trim and Stability

Through our term contracts for Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, Art Anderson Associates has served as the trim and stability "experts" for the fleet of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) research vessels for over 18 years. We've performed both intact and damaged stability analyses for over a dozen NOAA vessels. The in-depth scope of these analyses has included obtaining the above- and below-water lateral plane area and centroid, reach, and location of lifting equipment, propulsion systems, towing systems and tanks. Our naval architects were responsible for development of NOAA trim and stability standards and have prepared tools to assist vessel operators in calculating stability characteristics for any loading condition.

Marine Structures

Art Anderson Associates understands the unique challenges that face marine structures. Our naval architects have performed analyses and developed designs not only for vessels, but other non-powered floating facilities as well. Our analyses include calculating local and global structural strength, the behavior of structures under vibration, and the response of structures to the ever-changing environmental conditions outside the hull. Our analyses have included the use of finite element analysis techniques and software tools such as Algor, where we're able to apply multiple loads to complex structures and efficiently analyze the results.

Powering and Resistance Calculations

Art Anderson Associates has completed a number of naval architecture projects that have involved hydrodynamic analysis of hull resistance and power requirements. Often, these calculations are performed as a part of a repowering or renovation project, but they've also been components of some of our advanced research projects with the United States Navy. Our naval architects use software tools such as NavCAD to analyze the resistance of both displacement and planing vessels and use our professional knowledge and judgement to select appropriate engines and drivetrains. We also have experience in more rigorous forms of resistance calculations that include model development and tank testing.
